Craft beer expert speaks at Jernigan’s on May 16
Join Charles Bamforth, PhD, UC Davis’ beer expert, at Jernigan’s Tap House & Grill on Friday May 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for an informal discussion on craft brewing and craft beers.
Bamforth, who has written several books about beer, began his work in the brewing industry in 1978 and joined the UC Davis faculty in 1999. He is Distinguished Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences on campus. He is in great demand as a speaker and recently was the subject of a short film that struck gold in Hollywood.
Graduates from Bamforth’s programs hold key positions in breweries large and small over the globe. His current research program focuses primarily on the wholesomeness of beer.

About Charles Bamforth, PhD
Charles Bamforth, Ph.D., D.Sc., is a distinguished professor and leader of malting and brewing studies at the University of California, Davis. Bamforth has more than 35 years of academic and professional brewing expertise, including senior roles with Brewing Research International and Bass Brewers.
A fellow of several organizations, including the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD), Bamforth is also editor in chief of the Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC) and has published extensively on beer and brewing. He is a recipient of the ASBC’s Award of Distinction and is vice president of the IBD.
Professor Bamforth’s Intro to Beer Brewing, was voted best general education class for 2013 by UCD students.
About UCD Master Brewing Program
The Master Brewers Program is a unique, 18-week program that provides an in-depth understanding of brewing science and brewery engineering.
Major topics covered in brewing science include malting, mashing, brewing, fermentation and finishing, while the brewery engineering subject matter focuses on fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, solid-liquid separation and more.

UC Davis Extension Master Brewers Program graduate Ben Smith is the 2013 winner of the London-based International Institute of Brewing and Distilling’s prestigious JS Ford Award for the best overall performance on the Diploma in Brewing Exam. This is the fifth time in six years that a UC Davis Extension student has won the award.
