Snow falling at ski areas ahead of Halloween — new chairlifts, food trucks and more
“It’s snowing! Good morning from the Village at Northstar” was the report on the ski area’s Facebook page.
Other ski areas throughout North Tahoe and Truckee also reported snow, and their webcams showed the mountains blanketed in highly noticable layer of “white stuff.” (See photo of Northstar Village firepit above). The last time snow blanketed the slopes was September 21 — but this is the biggest storm so far.
Snow was reported in Truckee and at lake level at Tahoe.
“Chains are required on all vehicles except 4-wheel-drive-vehicles with snow tires on all 4 wheels from Kingvale (Placer Co) to Truckee (Nevada Co).,” Caltrans was reporting.
Boreal typically kicks off the ski season in the Sierra and Truckee-Tahoe, opening well before Thanksgiving. Ski areas such as Alpine Meadows are set to open December 13, “snow and weather permitting.”
Some highlights of the upcoming season include new food trucks at Squaw with “regionally grown, sustainably sourced food” to a new “Crow’s Peak” chairlift at Sugar Bowl.
We just updated our website with “winter family fun at ski areas.”
The Tahoe-Truckee area has been busier than usual with visitors this fall, thanks to an Indian Summer. The government shutdown also drew visitors that otherwise were headed to Yosemite.
