WITH 15 WINERIES AND OVER 40 VARIETALS, the Sierra Vintners wine region is an ideal location for wine enthusiasts to taste award-winning wines, meet the winemakers and enjoy a bucolic setting.

Though Sierra Vintners is an emerging wine region, its historic roots have made it a century-old destination for visitors looking to explore the heart of the state’s Gold Rush.

The wine-growing region is located in Placer, Yuba and Nevada counties, between Sacramento and Reno/Lake Tahoe, with easy access off I-80.

From Sacamento: 50 miles
From Lake Tahoe: 61 miles
From Reno: 70 miles
From San Francisco: 128 miles

Sierra Vintners wineries and tasting rooms are located throughout the foothills and within the Gold Rush-era towns of Grass Valley, Auburn and Nevada City.

It is part of the Sierra Foothills viticultural area, established in 1987 on the western edge of the Sierra Nevada — stretching roughly 160 miles from Yuba County to Mariposa County.

Wine grapes were first planted here during the Gold Rush. Similar to many California regions rich in wine history, winemaking re-emerged and flourished only within the past 30 years.

Day trips include visiting the wine tasting rooms in historic Grass Valley, including Lucchesi and Avanguardia. Local restaurants, such as the Thirsty Barrel and Tofanelli’s, serve many of the region’s wines.

Downtown Nevada City is home to Nevada City Winery and the tasting room of Szabo Vineyards. Grab lunch at restaurants such as Lefty’s Grill, Ike’s Quarter Café, and Jernigan’s, and visit Treats for homemade ice cream.
